This image captures the Rossio Square in Lisbon, Portugal, also known officially as Praça Dom Pedro IV. The prominent building on the left is the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II (D. Maria II National Theatre), a neoclassical structure built in the 1840s.
A statue of the 16th-century Portuguese playwright Gil Vicente is located on the pediment of the theatre. The square is famous for its distinctive, wavy-patterned Portuguese pavement (calcada portuguesa). The large, ornate fountain on the right is one of two Baroque fountains in the square, both imported from France.
