Welcome to our Hymer Adventures — a collection of real-life journeys, road trips, and slow travel stories as we explore the UK and Europe in our 1991 Hymer B564. This section of Tripaholics is where the maps meet reality, sharing honest experiences from wild camping spots and remote coastal roads to mountain passes, ferry crossings, breakdowns, and unforgettable views. It’s less about perfect itineraries and more about the freedom, challenges, and unexpected moments that make travelling by campervan so addictive.

The 1991 Hymer B564 (Citroën) is a classic German-built motorhome from Hymer’s respected A-Class range, built on the Citroën C25 chassis (the same platform used by early Fiat Ducato and Peugeot J5 models). Known for its solid construction and long-lasting build quality, the B564 is just under six metres long, making it compact enough for narrow European roads while still offering a practical and comfortable interior.

The layout features a generous pull down double bed above the cab, a central kitchen / diner which converts into another double bed, bathroom with toilet, basin and shower, and excellent storage throughout. With its simple mechanical setup and robust engineering, the Citroën-based Hymer B564 is especially popular with travellers who value reliability, ease of maintenance, and classic 90s motorhome charm over modern electronics.

Despite its age, our 1991 Hymer B564 (Citroën) is exceptionally well equipped for year-round travel. It features a full Truma gas heating system, keeping the interior warm and comfortable even on cold winter nights, along with hot water for showers and washing up with a large under seat water tank!

Our Hymer has also been fitted with solar panels, allowing us to recharge the leisure battery whenever we stop over, even in fairly remote locations. This means we can run the TV, charge phones, laptops, cameras, and other electronics without needing an electric hook-up. It gives us real off-grid freedom – whether we’re parked on a quiet coastal road, tucked away in the hills, or enjoying a peaceful pub stop for the night, we still have all the comforts of home powered by nothing but daylight.

Combined with Hymer’s famously solid insulation, double-glazed windows, and clever interior design, the van stays cosy in the depths of winter and cool enough during summer road trips. It’s genuinely more comfortable than many modern campervans and perfectly suited for off-season adventures, wild camping, and long European journeys.

One of the greatest luxuries of travelling in the 1991 Hymer B564 is the simple freedom of choosing your view for the night. Parking up somewhere special, pulling out the awning, and setting up the bikes from the rack on the back turns any quiet layby, coastal road, or mountain pass into your own private campsite. As the evening settles in, there’s nothing quite like sitting outside with a glass of wine, watching the light change over the landscape, knowing your bed, kitchen, heating, and comforts are all just a few steps away. It’s a feeling of total independence – home, adventure, and freedom all rolled into one.

So far, our travels in the 1991 Hymer B564 have taken us across some of the most beautiful parts of the UK, from the rugged coastlines of Wales to the historic streets of Whitby, the dramatic landscapes of the Lake District, and countless hidden corners of North Yorkshire. Each trip feels completely different, yet the constant is the freedom to go where we want, when we want, and stay as long as the view keeps impressing us.

We’ve experienced every style of overnight stop you can imagine. Some nights are spent wild camping by the side of quiet country roads, waking up to misty hills, birdsong, and the feeling of having the world to ourselves. Other times we take advantage of brilliant pub stopovers, where you’re welcome to park for the night for free, often with no obligation to eat or drink – just a friendly chat with the landlord and a peaceful place to rest.

When we fancy a bit more comfort, we also stay on Camping and Caravanning Club sites, enjoying full amenities like electric hook-up, proper showers, and the luxury of not worrying about water levels or batteries. The mix of wild freedom and organised campsites gives us the best of both worlds – adventure when we want it, and comfort when we need it.

That’s the magic of travelling this way. Every journey feels personal, every stop tells a story, and home is always wherever we decide to park for the night.
