Crib Goch and Crib y Ddysgl are exposed Grade 1 scrambles in Eryri (Snowdonia), involving the use of hands as well as feet. This is a serious mountain undertaking for experienced scramblers, not an ordinary walking route to Yr Wyddfa. Read the National Park’s specific guidance before considering it.
1. Planning from Pen y Pass: Arrange your transport or parking and plan the full mountain day before setting out. Carry appropriate navigation and equipment; this short article is an overview, not route-finding instructions.
2. Choose the route deliberately: If you intend to walk the Pyg Track without tackling Crib Goch, stay on the Pyg route. Do not follow others onto the ridge or treat the scrambling route as an impromptu detour.
3. Crib Goch ridge: The knife-edge ridge is highly exposed. The Park warns that there is no escape route from the ridge and that wet, windy or wintry conditions make this a serious mountaineering challenge. Do not take dogs.
4. Continuing towards Garnedd Ugain: Further scrambling remains beyond Crib Goch. Plan the complete traverse with a reliable map and route description, allowing for fitness, conditions and daylight.
5. Descent: Choose a suitable descent as part of your plan before starting. Do not assume you can simply reverse the ridge or drop directly onto the Miners’ Track. If unsure of route-finding or scrambling ability, choose another route or seek a qualified mountain professional’s advice.
