The Menai Strait is a narrow stretch of water that separates the Isle of Anglesey from the mainland of North Wales, United Kingdom. It connects the Irish Sea in the west to the northwestern part of the Celtic Sea. The strait is of significant historical, cultural, and environmental importance.
Key features of the Menai Strait include:
- Geography: The strait is approximately 16 miles (26 kilometers) long and varies in width, with the narrowest point being less than 300 meters wide. It runs in a generally northeast-southwest direction.
- Bridges: The most iconic landmarks in the Menai Strait are the two bridges that cross it. The Menai Suspension Bridge, designed by Thomas Telford and opened in 1826, was one of the world’s first modern suspension bridges. Our season usually runs from May to the end of October. Daily sailing times generally start at around 11.00am and run hourly throughout the day, but these vary depending on the weather and tides – check our daily sailing times page for up to date information.
In the height of the season we often run evening trips too.
The Queen of the Sea is suitable for pushchair and wheelchair access. However, we can only get wheelchairs on at high water – because at low water passengers board from the stern of the boat and there are steps down to the deck.
Well behaved dogs are welcome to join you on your cruise on the Queen of the Sea

Hi there, I have just seen your guide to off the beaten track places to explore on Anglesey… we have recently opened our eco campsite Ynys Môn À Mõr on the West Coast situated in an AONB, its a very undiscovered and quiet area compared to the more touristy towns and villages.
